Devotional #2 - Let Justice Flow

Verse of the Day:

“But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” – Amos 5:24 (NIV)

Devotional:

Imagine a river—powerful, deep, and constantly moving. That’s the image God uses to describe what our lives should look like when it comes to justice and righteousness.

In the book of Amos, God is calling out His people for something that might surprise you: they were doing all the “right” religious things, like singing worship songs, bringing offerings, and gathering at the temple. But their lives didn’t reflect God’s heart. They ignored the poor. They mistreated others. They lived unjustly while pretending to be spiritual.

So God says, “Enough of the performance. What I want is your life to overflow with justice and righteousness.”

Justice means treating people fairly, standing up for those who are hurting, and fighting against systems of oppression or discrimination.
Righteousness means living in right relationship—with God and with others—choosing what is good, pure, and loving.

And God doesn’t want this to be occasional. He wants it to flow—like a river that never stops, like a stream that never dries up.

This verse calls us, especially as young people, to live with a faith that flows into action. Not just Sunday faith, not just Instagram posts about causes, but real-life love in motion. It means:

  • Speaking up when someone is bullied.

  • Being kind even when it’s not cool.

  • Refusing to go along with gossip.

  • Listening to people whose stories are different than ours.

  • Making space at the table for those who feel unseen.

You might think, “But I’m just one person.” True. But rivers are made up of countless drops of water. Your one drop matters. And when we all let justice and righteousness flow from our lives, God’s love floods the world.

Closing Prayer:

God, I don’t want to just go through the motions. Help me live a life that reflects Your heart. Teach me to care about what You care about—justice for the oppressed, love for the hurting, and righteousness in my choices. Let Your Spirit move in me like a mighty river. Let justice and righteousness flow from my life every day. Amen.
